New jails for 8,000 to deal with overcrowding

JOHN REID is to announce plans for 8,000 new prison places to cope with the overcrowding crisis engulfing jails in England and Wales.

The move will be announced by the Home Secretary after a surge in jail sentences sent the prison population to a record 78,443 yesterday.
